Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life-and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving.

Report as inappropriate. At first glance, Fangirl positions itself to be a silly, fluffy piece about identical twin sisters and their freshman year at college, and how one sister in particular must navigate her way through this perilous and confusing time, all while trying to churn out chapter after chapter of fanfiction to her adoring online readers.
And it is that book, sweetly refreshing, never taking itself too seriously, but it also manages to be so much more -- about mental illness, friendship, sisters, mothers, living as an introvert in an extrovert's world, and falling in love, safely and sensibly with someone who deserves it no creepy pouty vampires here ladies and gentleman! I read Fangirl a few months ago, and it's stuck with me, it was that great. If you've ever loved a book series like Cath loves Simon Snow ie.
Harry Potter , or indeed, if you've ever been a passionate fan of anything and also maybe like a romantic plotline thrown in your YA fiction, this is the book for you. Rainbow Rowell perfectly captures what it's like to be a fangirl. Loved this book. I completely loved Fangirl!
It was touching, sweet, and laugh out loud funny. Rainbow Rowell's writing is superb and she has become one of my favorite authors because she creates such a fantastic variety of realistic characters that anyone can relate to. I love all their quirks, insecurities, and that they are perfectly imperfect. I didn't know very much about the world of fan fiction prior to reading this book, but I can definitely relate to the energy, excitement, and obsession in a fandom. It was fascinating to see how much it both helped and consumed Cath's life.
Although I enjoyed the glimpses into Simon Snow's world and plan to read Carry On, I did find the snippets at the end of the chapters a little distracting. This is probably because I was eager to get back to Cath and of course, Levi! Oh, Levi. He's adorably sweet and yes, he makes some mistakes, but that makes things all the more perfect at the end. I enjoyed Levi and Cath individually as characters and loved them together. Levi's easygoing additude and Cath's introverted nature are the perfect complement to each other.
Honestly, I could read about Cath and Levi forever. There are so many wonderful things I can say about the characters in this book. Rainbow Rowell's thoughtful portrayal of Cath's bipolar father and his struggles to navigate this new world without his daughter's at home was especially touching. Cath also struggles emotionally with her mother who abandoned the family and with Wren, her twin sister who has decided that college will be the moment to remake herself without Cath.
One of my favorite characters though, was Cath's roommate, Reagan. She provides some levity to the story and her sarcastic and snarky attitude are hilarious!
Even Professor Piper and Nick are well developed and play key roles in helping Cath come into her own. Everyone just felt so real and honest. Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life?

I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and the minute I was finished listening to it the first time, I wanted to listen to it again. I didn't because I have several other audiobooks in my library to listen to, but I really wanted to because it was that good.
So Cath is basically me No really. My name is Katherine which her's would have been if she wasn't a twin although spelled differently , and the college she's attending sounds a lot like the college I attended although I went to a private school not a major state university.
She is more of a city girl than I am, but that was really a very small facet of her personality as it pertains to the story. What I'm saying is that I really related to Cath and it took pretty much zero effort to step into her shoes, and that might be part of why I wanted to listen to the story again immediately, because the ending of her story was more what I'd wanted for my life at her age, but I didn't get there.
As far as the audiobook goes, I felt the narrator was perfect for Cath's voice. The accent was neutral to my ears as it should be for a midwestern girl , and while the opposite gender voices weren't spectacular, they also didn't seem like caricatures.
The Simon Snow and fanfic sections of the book were narrated by a man with a British accent and it worked well to set those segments apart from the main story. I would definitely recommend this as an audiobook if you enjoy them.
Overall I give Fangirl 5 out of 5 stars. Hardcover Verified Purchase. Twin sisters, Cath and Wren, have been inseparable until their freshman year of college when Wren decides she wants to go out on her own. Cath is not only left without her sister, but also her best friend as she embarks on this new journey. She ends up hiding from the world only attending classes because she has to and we discover her obsession with Simon and Baz which just so happens to be the Harry Potter series!
We watch as she comes out of her shell, learns to stand up for herself, creates friendships, and even falls in love. The whole book was perfection. It was not only super cute, but it felt so REAL. It was easy to connect with Cath, to feel what she was going through, and to completely understand all the crazy emotions that come up especially having gone through it.
I loved all the characters and the snippets from the Simon Snow series as well as the Fanfixx. I will definitely be rereading this again and again!!
Amy Slager Top Contributor: The first half of the book was a fun take on the life of an introvert geek.
I felt it was right up my alley and so easy to read. I did find that the second half dragged more than the first, but was still entertaining overall. My biggest problem with the book is centered around the relations between Cath and her new boyfriend. Cath has a lot of insecurities and anxieties which could have been addressed a bit more, I think ie. That's fine as long as both parties are in favour of the change, but when I kept reading Cath apologize over and over to her boyfriend for how her discomfort was making her behave around him, and he appeared to be subtly guilting her into more and more Also, I know I seem to be in the minority on this but I found the descriptions of their first night of partial physical intimacy to be really awkward and cheesy!
And rubbing her face all over his facial features ear, chin, widow's peak like a cat with catnip? Perhaps RR wrote it that way on purpose and if so, my apologies but I found myself rolling my eyes quite a bit during that whole scene! I did enjoy the fanfic scenes and look forward to reading Carry On in the near future. Essentially a microcosmic early twenty-first century female Bildungsroman, Fangirl is a light and capricious narrative that acknowledges the challenges of early adulthood e.
