Clear, consistent, and user-friendly, the updated edition of Physiology , by renowned physiology instructor Dr. Linda Costanzo, offers a comprehensive overview of core physiologic concepts at the organ system and cellular levels. It presents information in a short, simple, and focused manner, making it an ideal combination textbook and review guide for the USMLE Step 1. You'll grasp all the essential and relevant physiology knowledge you need for absolute success in school and on your exams! Would you like to tell us about a lower price? Build a strong understanding of the underlying principles of cellular physiology, the autonomic nervous system, and neurophysiology, as well as the cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, acid-base, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and reproductive organ systems.
I found getting the hard copy much better than the ebook because of the ease of scribbling, underlying and annotating. With this book, you don't need another thicker physiology textbook - it has everything you need to know, at least for physiology. This book is clearly organized and the explanation are impeccable - I used it to review for classes and final exams in medical school as well as for Step 1.
The best chapters in my opinion are the endocrinology and reproductive chapters. Keep in mind this doesn't have heme, MSK or derm so you'll need to get that information elsewhere! This textbook is phenomenal. It was recommended by a physician at the hospital I work at before I began my first year of medical school and let me tell you- this text is clear and concise, and it helped out tremendously. I preferred this text way over the text that was used for class. It followed along with our lectures nicely and broke things down to more of a simpler level, which made learning the material better.
The student access code it comes with allows you to have the book online where you can answer questions and so forth and have them 'checked'. I love this book and would definitely suggest. Linda Costanzo also wrote the BRS series review book, which is more of a compacted version of this, so both sources together were excellent. I haven't read all of it, but it has really helped clear up CV, Pulm, Renal, and Acid-base physiology.
It does the job. The key with this book is to read a chapter in chunks--the same probably goes for GH and most larger textbooks, I guess. Most if not all chapters are less than 70pgs most are around One critique would be to have a couple Box sections to highlight clinical experiments. If you have medical school physio question source though you're not missing much at all with regards to experiments though.
One person found this helpful. Great book for M1 students.
It covers The figures are very clear and understandable and the Clinical Cases are great. Added bonus: I'm thrilled our instructor chose this book. So far I have only read a couple chapters in this book but Linda is the truth! Medical school physiology does not have to be hard and Linda proves this with her simple explainations and simple illustrations. I advise any medical student who is having trouble grasping concepts in class to purchase this ASAP!
Best physiology book overall for medical school. Almost a must have. You can get away without it, but it's SO much easier to just take the time to read the book.
Everything is crystal clear, easy to read, and CONCISE which is apparently the most challenging thing to do when writing medical textbooks. This book will probably explain physiology concepts better than your professors do.
I use this as a supplemental text for medical school and mainly consult it when I feel like the concepts are being made more confusing than they need to be.
More often than not, reading the same material in Costanzo will clear things up for me just fine. Especially helpful for endocrinology. See all reviews. Customers who viewed this item also viewed. Paperback Verified Purchase. As a medical student I'm slightly annoyed that I did not find out how flipping awesome Costanzo's physiology book is until half way through my first year of medical school. I see myself using it as a reference during second year as well.

It's soooo easy to read. She gets to the point. I need to understand what's going on and then apply it clinically. I am not interested in learning about every single detail to go out a develop a chemical marker for a disease process No matter what your prof says!!!! For some unexplained reason my professor hates this book. However, he is a terrible lecturer and without this book there is no way that I would have passed my first semester of M1 physiology.
This book is concise and keeps the information easy and understandable. She will often explain a concept and then will have an example that will follow to make things more concrete.
Plus there are these "challenge yourself" questions which asks questions of you with answers provided that really helps you solidify and repeat what you have learned.
There are times that you may want a little more detail than what Costanzo is offering, but those times will be few and far between.

I am a big fan of physio books. I have 4 of them, and this by far is the best. The only thing that I would say is a short coming of the book is that there are certain topics that you might not expect to find under a particular section. All the information is there but maybe a few times you may have to look in a different section of the book than you would have expected to find the information.

I bought this book to supplement my classes and have learned an immense amount of information from it. Costanzo does an amazing job making you understand all human physiology and even sometimes briefly explains pathophysiology. Costanzo and it basically a "Sparknotes" type summary of each chapter with practice questions. I am using this book as one of two reference texts for my vet school Physiology course.
I haven't taken any physiology courses prior to this, so my knowledge base is virtually nil. When I get confused about lecture topics, I consult this book first. It is written in a very easy-to-read and easy-to-understand way--I really haven't ever run across a textbook that is so reader-friendly--so it is fantastic for cementing basic concepts. It is not, however, detailed enough for my course, which is why I am giving this book only 4 stars. One person found this helpful. I'm a first year medical student and used this book for our physiology class after trying the one the professors recommended and hating it.
Constanzo was recommended to me by a second year student and they were spot on. Things are organized in a very logical way and combined with the clear explanations made things very easy for me to understand. Our recommended course text on the other hand was very dense and often explained concepts in a way that was much more complicated than necessary, so Constanzo saved me.
Since each section is an easy read and not that lengthy it was also easy for me to read Constanzo on top of the rest of my course work, it was never too time-consuming to do. And I did really well in phys so this book definitely paid off for me. I also liked that there are a lot of diagrams all in color and good summary tables throughout. There's also a bit on pathophysiology at the end of each section giving a good introduction to some of the main renal, CV, etc.
I can easily see why Constanzo is so popular both as a textbook for courses and for board review with the smaller BRS physiology version. I definitely recommend this book for medical students.
Since this book already has so many great reviews, there isn't much more I can say. I bought this book to help me out with physio in Veterinary school. I was really struggling with cardiology and now I really enjoy the subject. The diagrams are great, the text is simple to understand, I am in love with this book!
I can't believe how much it has helped me, and how cheap it is compared with other books. This is the best purchase I have made for text books in school.
