I pre-ordered Ashley Bell as soon as it was available. I was looking forward to the release. I was disappointed beyond adequate description. I see that most people have given Ashley Bell good reviews.
And because a reader may still choose to read the book, I won't give away storyline. What I will say is that some suspension of disbelief is always necessary, more so in a book with some supernatural themes. However, for me, this book almost required suspension of thinking. The plot got ever more ridiculous, and the final reveal was even more of a letdown than I thought possible.
I am truly unhappy at posting such a negative review for one of my favorite authors, but with so many positive reviews for this book, I thought readers who were looking for guidance about purchasing should have both opinions presented. Or The City. Or Innocence. Or the first Frankenstein book.
Or Strangers Paperback Verified Purchase. He got lost in the fog, it would seem there's a lot of fog in this story. I've read and loved every novel Mr. Koontz ever wrote Give it a pass. If you don't, you can't say we didn't warn you. I can't believe ANYONE but his publishing house, family, and editors are giving this five stars, unless it's your first Koontz title, and you don't know what magic that man formerly wove. Koontz, up your game, or retire. You should not have allowed this to be published.
I was really excited to get this new book as DK is one of my favorite authors, but I was SO disappointed in this book. It was interesting to start out. No spoilers but then the whole book changed in the middle, and then just got so stupid.. What a mess! This reminds me of some of that really bad sci Fi shows that appear to have no writers. It just winds thru endless strange stuff so you apparently should just use your imagination. I used mine and deleted it from my reader.
Let me start by saying that it breaks my heart to leave this review for this novel. I'm a Dean Koontz fan from the beginning of his career, having read every book he's written.
I've always loved his writing. It's descriptive to the point that it makes me feel like I'm living alongside his characters. His stories are page-turners with more turns that a roller-coaster. But, Ashley Bell Was terrible! It was almost as if there was someone else impersonating Dean Koontz writing the book. The characters in the story were not developed enough for me to care about them. Koontz tells the story by flashing back and forth through the memory of the main character, Bibi.
However, the memories are pointless and don't seem to be connected to each other. And, Koontz spends pages describing things totally irreverent to the storyline. I struggled to finish the book because I just didn't care anymore about how it would end. I just kept thinking it would turn and it get better. Unfortunately, it did not. It was almost like Koontz needed to publish a novel and BUE he had no story to tell. So, I got the impression he was trying to convince the reader that there was a story and he was building up to it.
No story. At least not a good one! Save your money. Not bad.
Total online: English Published: December 8th Series: Featuring the most exhilarating heroine in memory and a sophisticated, endlessly ingenious, brilliantly paced narrative through dark territory and deep mystery, this is a new milestone in literary suspense and a major new breakout book from the long acclaimed master.
Fierce, funny, dauntless, she becomes obsessed with the idea that she was spared because she is meant to save someone else. Someone named Ashley Bell.
This proves to be a dangerous idea. Searching for Ashley Bell, ricocheting through a southern California landscape that proves strange and malevolent in the extreme, Bibi is plunged into a world of crime and conspiracy, following a trail of mysteries that become more sinister and tangled with every twisting turn.
Unprecedented in scope, infinite in heart, Ashley Bell is a magnificent achievement that will capture lovers of dark psychological suspense, literary thrillers, and modern classics of mystery and adventure. Beautifully written, at once lyrical and as fast as a bullet, here is the most irresistible novel of the decade.
